Educational situation of children in general in Calcutta

A survey covering the entire Calcutta, conducted by S.M. Cyril of Loreto Day School in 1999 - under the City Level Plan of Action – provide the following shocking figures. Of the children between the ages of:

  • 3 and 4 years old 72% do not go to school
  • 5 and 9 years old 25% do not go to school
  • 10 and 14 years old 28,8% do not go to school
  • Percentage illiterates: 66%
  • Percentage drop-outs: 78,5%
  • 87% have had a maximum of 4 years of education
  • Only 3% reach the educational level of someone who has completed the primary school
  • 19% remain at pre-primary school level
